off-road vehicle SAFETY
Mandatory for off-road vehicle excursion guides
Background
The Regulation respecting the recognition of training for off-highway vehicle excursion guides, adopted on June 16, 2021, has been in effect since December 31, 2021. This regulation is aimed at better equipping the guides to enable them to offer an even safer experience to their clientele.
Thus, before guiding a group in return for payment, a guide must now have successfully completed the following mandatory training:
- Wilderness and Remote First Aid (20 hours)
- Safety Concepts for Off-Road Vehicle Excursion Guides
Description
Lasting 17 hours and offered at a cost of $495, plus taxes, the goal of "Safety Concepts for Off-Road Vehicle Excursion Guides" is to equip persons who guide groups in off-road vehicles to adopt a safe approach before, during and after the excursion, and to generate increased safety concern among participants. Following the recommendations of a committee of experts, training was improved, especially regarding interpretation concepts, travel on a body of water and organization of searches for a lost client.
The off-highway vehicle excursion guide attestation is issued by Aventure Écotourisme Québec. The attestation is valid for a period of three years and is renewable for the same period.
Prerequisite: First Aid Certification (20 hours)
To follow this training and obtain the off-highway vehicle excursion guide attestation, you must first hold one of these certifications:
- Wilderness First Aid, 20 hours (certification provided by SIRIUSMEDx)
- Wilderness and Remote First Aid, 20 hours (certification provided by the Canadian Red Cross)
An exception can be made for your first-aid training to be taken after your off-highway vehicle excursion guide training. However, your guide attestation will only be issued when you have successfully completed both training sessions.
